Hernandez breaks scoreless tie in OT, Lynx win 3rd straight on pitch

Missed opportunities in 1st half force WCHS into extra time

ALLEMAN — At first glance, the Webster City boys’ soccer team’s non-conference road match against North Polk on Tuesday was a mirror-image of the extended contest against Iowa Falls-Alden just 24 hours earlier.

Both matches went 80 minutes without a goal, and both matches ended early in overtime with the Lynx celebrating a 1-0 victory.

There was one big difference, however, and that came in the performance by WCHS, according to head coach Craig Signorin.

While Signorin was happy to escape with the one-goal win over Iowa Falls-Alden in blustery conditions on Monday, he saw no reason why his team had to struggle for its third straight win against the Comets and that left him frustrated on the bus ride home.

“We can make excuses, but in reality if we finish early and have guys on the field that can lift us up, I don’t think we need to go into overtime (on Tuesday),” Signorin said. “We had the wind in the first half and had two to three great chances inside the box. Their keeper (Tim Maier) was outstanding, but we failed to find a corner when the opportunities came.”

WCHS (3-2) peppered 18 shots toward the goal and got 12 inside the frame, but Maier’s one-man wall kept the match scoreless. He finished with 11 saves.

North Polk (1-5), which has dropped three straight matches, got off just 12 shots and only five on frame. Lynx goalkeeper Jon Magdaleno was in position for all five saves.

The defensive standstill finally ended a little more than two minutes into overtime. Sam Moberly — the hero in Monday’s win over IF-A — attempted to clear a ball that teammate Everado Hernandez took out of the air. Maier sprinted out of goal to challenge 30 yards away, but Hernandez pushed the ball by him and struck a bouncing ball that found the back of the net for the match winner and his third goal of the season.

WCHS will have the rest of the week to prepare for Monday’s home North Central Conference match against Garner-Hayfield/Ventura, which is set for a 5:30 p.m. start. It will be the second meeting of the season between the teams; GHV prevailed on April 1, 1-0.
