BOONE CAN BASH

No. 7 Toreadors hit 2 dingers, roll past Lynx

WEBSTER CITY — Barring an arranged date by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union in the postseason, the Webster City softball team is done with Boone all-everything senior Emma Dighton.

And the Lynx aren’t shedding any tears about that either.

Dighton has spent five years terrorizing opponents across central Iowa, and Tuesday night just happened to be Webster City’s turn.

Again.

Dighton bashed a first-inning solo home run — a mammoth shot to left-center that was the 50th of her career and second in six meetings against the Lynx — and finished 3 for 4 with four runs scored and an RBI in the seventh-ranked (Class 4A) Toreadors’ 11-1 victory over WCHS.

She reached base five times, including when WCHS didn’t even allow her to reach the batter’s box before it shipped her to first with an intentional walk in the sixth.

“She’s a tough hitter and is going to put the ball in play wherever you pitch her,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said of Dighton, a career .619 hitter with 11 RBIs against the Lynx.

But Boone (15-4) is not a one-trick pony. In fact, the Toreadors are loaded with power.

Boone scored in six of the seven frames and rattled WCHS pitcher Jenna Miller for 12 hits, five of which went for extra bases. Lead-off stick Emily Ades also went deep — a solo blast that smacked off the foul pole down the left-field line in the seventh inning. She had two hits, as did younger sister Erin Ades.

Laena Solverson, Alex McDonough and Natalee Danner all roped doubles. McDonough’s gapper into right-center in the sixth plated three runs and increased Boone’s lead to 10-0.

“They’re a very tough hitting team and they play defense very sound,” Howard said. “Some of them have been on the field for five years, and they did a good job of putting the ball in play.”

WCHS (11-6) avoided the mercy rule by scratching a run across in the bottom of the sixth. Leah Kasch set it in motion with a one-out single to center, and younger sister Livia Kasch followed with a double to right-center. Leah Kasch slid into the dish safely with the team’s only run on an RBI ground ball off the bat of Miller.

WCHS notched five hits off Toreadors’ right-handed pitcher Kennedy Lewis, but it took the Lynx four-plus innings to get to her. Lewis retired 10 straight batters during one early stretch and had a no-hitter through 42⁄3 before Trinity Griffith broke it up with an infield single deep in the hole at short. Adeline Tesdahl lined a single into center on the next pitch.

Griffith added a base hit to right in the seventh and finished 2 for 3 at the dish.

Miller was responsible for eight earned runs. She walked three and struck out four, including two in a row in the third with a Boone base runner standing on second.

WCHS got a first-hand look at what a senior-dominated opponent looks like, and Howard says her club needs to learn from it.

“We’ve got to take it as a learning experience and not as a tone-setter for us,” she said.

The Lynx, who entered last night’s road game at Humboldt leading the North Central Conference, will take part in the Martensdale St. Mary’s tournament on Saturday. They’ll face AHSTW and 10th-ranked (1A) Martensdale St. Mary’s.
