Brandt owns the discus, Tesdahl a 3-time champ at Cadet Relays

Lynx 4th ... or were they actually 3rd?

IOWA FALLS — Clint Howard had watched enough throws in practice and in warm-ups prior to meets to know that it was only a matter of time until Hannah Brandt put it all together when it matters most.

That moment came Monday evening.

Brandt obliterated her personal-best throw in the discus and left the competition in the dust at the Cadet Relays. Her heave of 116 feet, 2 inches won the event by more than 26 feet.

Whoa.

“Hannah has been throwing very well in practice and warm-ups, but has just struggled to hit one in a meet,” Howard, Webster City’s head girls’ track and field coach, said. “But we knew it was only a matter of time because she works so hard. Hopefully this gives her a boost of confidence to just keep doing it.”

WCHS claimed four gold medals in all and scored 123 points to finish fourth in the field. Technically, the Lynx should have been third. St. Edmond, which officially finished seven points in front of WCHS, was mistakenly awarded eight points for the second groups it inserted into the distance medley and 4×400-meter relays.

Iowa Falls-Alden won its home meet with 165 points, nine ahead of runner-up Grundy Center (156).

WCHS freshman Adeline Tesdahl had a strong night hurdling en route to three gold medals. She won the 100 (17.87 seconds) and 400 (1:15.08) hurdles, and also was on the anchor of the Lynx first-place shuttle hurdle relay (1:16.35). Brynna Croy, McKenzie Mishler and Bonnie Nohrenberg opened the relay.

Tesdahl added a fourth medal, a bronze, in the long jump (15-3). Lexi Nichols was the high jump runner-up (4-6), as was the Lynx sprint medley (2:05.38) of Fallon Casey, Marah Range, Chloe Andersen and Sierra Steuerwald.

Croy (100 hurdles, 18.93) and Shelby Queen (400, 1:07.79) were individual bronze medalists.

Now it’s on to Thursday’s North Central Conference meet in Humboldt, which will get started with field events at 5 p.m.
