Lynx split 4 matches, reach semifinals of tourney

MADRID — The Webster City volleyball team reached the championship pool of the Madrid Invitational on Saturday, but fell to eventual gold medalist Van Meter in the semifinals.

The Lynx (15-11), who won the tournament in 2018, went 2-2 on the day. They rolled in their opening set of the day against West Marshall, but the Trojans regrouped to win in three sets, 10-21, 21-19, 15-5.

WCHS bounced back with consecutive 2-0 wins over Ankeny Christian (21-6, 21-14) and Madrid (21-18, 21-12) in pool play to advance, but couldn’t overcome Van Meter in a 2-0 loss (25-15, 25-21).

Van Meter went on to beat West Marshall in three sets to capture the crown.

WCHS put together an .092 kill efficiency on the day with 43 errors at net, well below where it wants to be. Adalie Schwandt hit a team-best .315.

Schwandt and Grace Hoversten, the Lynx two middle attackers, each at 21 kills, as they combined for 42 of the team’s 64 winners. Morgan Gallentine added 11 to go along with the 33 assists she distributed. Haley Foster checked in with seven kills and 25 digs.

Hoversten was equally effective at net on defense where she collected 12 blocks. Anderson Faith Anderson finished the day with 21⁄2 snuffs.

Lynx sophomore libero Alayna Finucan extended her Class 4A-leading digs total with 38 more. She now has 377 on the season, 52 more than Boone’s Kinsie Zinnel, who resides in the No. 2 spot.

Jenna Miller and Kelly Stoakes contributed 14 digs each and Gallentine had 12 more. Miller shared the setting duties with Gallentine and distributed 25 assists.

Behind the service line, WCHS had 16 aces on the day. Finucan led the way with six, Gallentine had four and Foster chipped in three.

WCHS will be back at home this evening for a non-conference match against Algona Garrigan at 7:30 p.m.
