3 clutch 2-RBI hits push WCHS past Cowgirls

CLARION — A struggle at times, the Webster City softball team came through with just enough clutch hits to remain at the top of the North Central Conference standings here Wednesday evening.

All on two-RBI singles, the Lynx scored two runs in the second, third and seventh innings to power past Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, 6-3.

“We did enough to come out on top,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said after her club improved to 10-4 overall and 6-0 in the NCC to keep pace with co-leader and second-ranked (Class 3A) Humboldt. “We had some girls get some key hits for us that drove in the runs we needed to come out on top.”

Leah Kasch, Jenna Miller and Alayna Finucan all laced two hits off Cowgirls’ pitcher Gabby Hackley. Coincidentally enough, all three produced the run-scoring singles.

Finucan put WCHS in front to stay with her two-run knock in the second. Miller matched it an inning later to put the Lynx in front 4-0. Kasch added some insurance in the seventh with a shot that plated two runs.

CGD (1-8, 0-5 NCC) scored two unearned runs in the seventh to close the gap to three.

WCHS out hit the Cowgirls 9-3. Atlanta Hopp also smacked a pair of singles. Kelly Stoakes and Zoey Woodle both had one.

Inside the pitcher’s circle, Miller was touched for only one earned run. The sophomore walked just one and struck out seven.
