IOWA FALLS — Webster City boys’ soccer coach Craig Signorin felt like the second half was going his team’s way here Tuesday evening, right up until the moment it all went completely wrong.

Locked in a 2-2 tie, Iowa Falls-Alden rattled off a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes to prevail over the Lynx, 4-2.

“We came out and I thought dominated play (in the second half),” Signorin said.

But IF-A (3-2) had Jaden Penning and that was the ultimate difference.

Penning scored all four of the Cadets’ goals, highlighted by the go-ahead score in the 65th minute that he was able to slide past WCHS goalkeeper Carsen Johnson. And just for good measure, Penning took the ball down the pitch and rifled in his fourth goal in the 78th to put the match on ice.

“Speed kills,” Signorin said. “We pushed numbers and Penning went on a 60-yard run.”

Isaac Bernard scored both of the WCHS goals, one in each half. He was in the right place at the right time and flicked in a rebound in the third minute to stake the Lynx (3-3) to a 1-0 lead, an advantage they maintained until the 37th when Penning evened it heading into the intermission.

“After a long weekend and a terrible practice (on Monday) with little energy, the first half looked exactly how I thought the game would go,” Signorin said.

Bernard squared the match at 2 in the 56th minute on a penalty kick after Carter Neuroth was fouled in the box by the Cadets’ Eli Widmann.

IF-A out shot WCHS 12-8, including 8-4 on frame. Johnson came up with four saves in net.

The WCHS junior varsity team beat the Cadets in penalty kicks on makes by Zhak Johnson, Luis Montes and Jake Lahr, as well as two saves in net by Gage Rossing. The match was tied at 2 at the end of the regulation. Blake Streigal and Connor Symens both scored goals.
