Field events, speed carry Lynx girls at Ryan Relays

Flaws, Woodle lug home four medals each, WCHS?fourth at outdoor opener

GOWRIE — Field events and speed — lots and lots of speed — are where the Webster City girls’ track team will butter its bread this spring, and the Lynx showcased their talents in those events at Tuesday’s Richard Ryan Relays.

WCHS accumulated eight top-three finishes, including four gold-medal performances, and scored 84 points to place fourth in the Class A standings. Pocahontas Area (198 points) rolled to the team title; Carroll (113) and South Central Calhoun (108) took second and third, respectively.

Versatile junior Haley Flaws put on a show in the outdoor opener, as she powered WCHS with an individual title in the 100-meter dash (12.78 seconds), a runner-up result in the high jump (5 feet) and on the anchor of both the winning 4×100 (52.94) and 4×200 (1:53.84) relays.

Zoey Woodle, a sophomore, provided plenty of lift as well. She joined Flaws on the two relays, took second to her teammate in the 100 (13.47) and placed third in the long jump (15-0).

Tatum Goings also ran a leg on the winning relays; Ashlyn Hay led off the 4×100 and Marisa Garrels ran the opening leg of the 4×200.

“Our identity is the field events, the sprints and the sprint relays,” WCHS head coach Clint Howard said. “Our upperclassmen have worked hard throughout the offseason and then we’ve got a lot of newcomers with very good speed.”

Veteran thrower Cassidy Nerland was her usual points-producing self. The two-time state medalist in the shot put added another gold medal in the event (39-0) and she followed it up with silver in the discus (111-5).
