Cubs jump ahead in sixth, beat Hawks, 6-4

NEVADA – The South Hamilton baseball team was unable to generate enough offense to overcome five errors in a 6-4 loss to Nevada last Thursday night.

It was just the second win of the season for the Cubs (2-21, 2-14 HOIC), who, surprisingly, also own a victory over No. 9-ranked (Class 2A) Roland-Story.

“When you make five errors, it’s tough,” South Hamilton head coach Kyle Galetich said. “We don’t score a lot of runs anyway, so we’ve got to be pretty good at run prevention and making the plays we need to make.”

South Hamilton (4-15, 3-12 HOIC) connected for just five hits, all of them singles. Zeke Balderas, Rylan Harris, Tristan Twedt, Jake Hand and Colton Schwerin supplied the hits. Hand drove in two runs with his base knock in the fourth. Balderas and Landon Quam also plated runs.

“We didn’t hit the ball real great and that’s something we’ve struggled with all year,” Galetich said.

Nevada scattered eight hits off Hawks’ starting pitcher Trey Woodall. He struck out five and walked four.

The Cubs scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning.
