Miller hits another game winner, Lynx girls claim second straight victory

IOWA FALLS – Kayla Miller should pretend that the clock is just about to hit zero right before every shot that she takes.

That way she might never miss again.

For the second time in four days, the Webster City senior beat the clock and ripped the hearts out of the opponent here Friday night. Miller scooped up an offensive rebound off an Allie Flaws’ missed 3-pointer and tossed it in the hoop with two seconds remaining to break a 42-all tie and propel the Lynx to a 44-42 victory over North Central Conference rival Iowa Falls-Alden.

Last Tuesday, Miller broke a tie against South Central Calhoun with a short jumper in the final half-minute and WCHS went on to win 54-49.

“I’m very happy for (Miller) and that’s what you really want from your seniors,” WCHS head coach Nicole Muhlenbruch said. “She doesn’t even look like she’s rattled. She just gets the ball and shoots it. She looks like she has a lot of confidence.”

Miller finished with a team-high 12 points. Gabbi Hoversten also scored in double figures for the Lynx with 10, and she also corralled nine rebounds, distributed three assists and collected three steals.

WCHS led 36-29 after three quarters courtesy of a 16-9 run, but eventually fell behind following an 8-0 IF-A spurt.

The Lynx jumped up 42-40 when Hoversten sank a pair of free throws, but Anna Pomeroy matched her at the free throw line to draw even at 42 with 10.4 ticks remaining.

IF-A (0-6, 0-2 NCC) received 17 points from forward Saje Ites. Playing four freshmen, the Cadets showed they could be a team to contend with in the future.

“A win is a win whether it’s one point, two points or 50. We’ll take it,” Muhlenbruch said. “I told the girls that (the Cadets) were much better than what they had been the last couple of years and we had to go in there and play well.”

Cassidy Bultena chipped in eight points, five rebounds and four steals in the win for WCHS (3-2, 2-0 NCC), which remained unbeaten in the league. Cassidy Nerland recorded seven points before she fouled out.

The Lynx will face a tough task on Tuesday when they head back out on the road to face ninth-ranked (Class 3A) Hampton-Dumont in Hampton at 6:15 p.m.
