No. 11 Hawk boys claim fourth straight meet title

STORY CITY – The field may have been bigger, but the result remained the same.

It was another good day to be a Hawk.

The 11th-ranked South Hamilton boys’ cross country team picked up their fourth consecutive meet championship yesterday, as the Hawks navigated the 14-team Roland-Story Invitational with success at River Bend Golf Course.

Freshmen Gaige Pickering and Logan Peters again paved the way to 102 points and a seven-point victory over Ogden. Bondurant-Farrar (109) lost the runner-up spot on a tiebreaker, and Madrid/Woodward-Granger (115) was fourth.

“There were a lot of good teams there and the guys were really happy,” South Hamilton head coach Darrell Paulsen said. “It was a good team victory and it was close.”

Pickering led the charge with an 11th-place finish in 17:38 and Logan Peters wasn’t far behind, crossing in 17:54 to take 13th. Drake Thompson (17:55) also broke 18 minutes and was on Peters’ heels to slot into 14th.

“Our first three kids ran exceptionally well against some good competition,” Paulsen said.

After struggling to finish Tuesday’s race at State Center, Devon Fisher was a bit tentative and settled for 22nd in 18:15. Trey Woodall jumped into the scoring five for the first time this season; he was 42nd in 19:01.

“It just shows you the importance of having six runners because we needed that sixth runner,” Paulsen said. “Trey ran a really good race.”

Hayley Bell (23:29, 37th) led the Hawk girls’ team to a 14th-place result.
