My paternal grandfather, who I knew as Opa, was born in 1899, the year the first automobiles were displayed in Iowa at the Linn County Fair. Opa celebrated his 11th birthday on April 29, 1910, less than a week before the first documented powered, heavier-than-air airplane flight in Iowa occurred. On the day after Opa’s 23rd birthday, WOI Radio in Ames was granted a license to operate Iowa’s first radio station. Letter to the editor, The people of Webster City may not know there is a golden road that leads to 604 Prospect Street, the home of Webster City Congregate meal site. Congregate meals is very close to my heart. My mother, Violet and my husband, Marlin, went to Congregate meals until they passed away. They not only got delicious meals, but they also enjoy the camaraderie. My husband, Marlin, volunteered at Congregate Meals for 23 years. A glance out the window of my central Iowa home reminds me that this isn’t open water fishing season.
