JERALD ‘JERRY’ SCHNATHORST

JERALD ‘JERRY’ SCHNATHORST

Jerald “Jerry” Lloyd Schnathorst passed away unexpectedly at his home July 17, 2021. Jerry was born on August 16, 1939 to Lloyd and Wima Schnathorst, he was the oldest of 6 children. Jerry grew up in Newton, graduating in 1958. Jerry married Sandra Gamble May 28, 1966, they had three boys: Denny, David, and J.J..

Jerry began his career in law enforcement in the United States Army serving as Military Police and a paratrooper which he willingly signed up for as they paid an additional $25 a month. Once he completed his time in the armed forces in 1965 he started with the Iowa State Patrol which he retired from in 1998.

Jerry was one of a kind, a loyal husband, a family man who was quick to discipline his boys with 20 push-ups, a charismatic sports enthusiast who was known to be loud and ornery, eager to cheer you on while up at bat or to harass an umpire on your behalf. This summer Jerry joined his boys in NYC for his first Yankees game after being a lifelong fan. Jerry lived his life playing and watching sports, usually with a camera in his hands. As a father of three boys he stayed busy coaching baseball and flag football, involved with little league and the Carlisle Booster Club.

Jerry definitely lived a life his family and friends will celebrate- knowing he touched all he met either pulling you over for speeding or just to ask you the final score of your game; by hitting your car with a 16 inch softball at North park; to playing cards with his siblings every Sunday in Newton; that strong encouraging coach of your baseball team; or perhaps putting a trooper move on you dropping you to the floor in a blink of an eye. “Grandpa Jerry” will be missed.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, late wife Sandy, and brother, Dennis. Jerry leaves behind a family and community that will greatly miss him, sons Denny (Gina) his children Kaylee, Ty, and Taylor; David (Mary) their children Gabby, Troy, and Delaney; J.J., his children Ashlynne and Makalah; Sister, Janice (Curt) Barber; Sister, Pat (Terry) Otto; Brother, David (Pam) Schnathorst; Sister-in-law, Greta Schnathorst; Sister, Carol (Denny) Petty.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 20 from 5-8 p.m. at the Carlisle United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 21 at 10 a.m. at the Carlisle United Methodist Church in Carlisle with burial to follow at the Carlisle Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family who will direct funds to the Carlisle Booster Club. Online condolences may be made at www.petersonfuneralservice.com
