Webster City man dies of burns from riding lawn mower fire

A Webster City man succumbed Sunday night to the serious burns he suffered in a riding lawn mower accident in Webster City on September 29.

Todd Koop, 56, was burned when the mower he was using caught fire.

The accident burned the lower portion of his body.

Webster City Fire responded to the property at 1714 West Second Street on what had been called in as a possible house fire, Fire Chief Chuck Stansfield reported.

Firefighters arrived shortly after 2 p.m. They found a riding lawn mower “fully involved” with fire and a person with critical burns, Stansfield said in a media release.

Van Diest Medical Center ambulance also responded to the call and transported Koop to the hospital.

Air Care Two out of Waterloo was called for medical transport, according to scanner traffic.

Koop was taken to the University of Iowa Burn Treatment Center.

Stansfield said it appeared the fire started due to some type of mechanical malfunction.

“Todd will be greatly missed,” Mary Clausen said Monday. “The family and friends ask for your prayers at this difficult time.”

She said the family would like to thank the first responders who rescued Koop from the fire.

“We thank them very much.”
