Young asks more people to run for office
Hamilton County Supervisor Rick Young on Tuesday made a plea for individuals to run for public office.
“How many people complain about the streets and roads?” he asked at the beginning of his report during the Board of Supervisors meeting at the Hamilton County Courthouse.
“I feel everyone should do two things: work in retail or do public service.”
There are several opportunities in service at upcoming elections, he continued. School board and city council seats in every community have positions open up for elections.
To run, after completing the necessary paperwork, that paperwork then needs to be filed with the city clerk or the school board in the candidate’s respective areas.
Also during the supervisors meeting on Tuesday:
— The Heart of Iowa Regional Housing Trust Fund contract was renewed. Supervisor April Ely expressed her support. “It’s a great program.”
The Trust Fund provides assistance to homeowners who need repairs on their dwelling, if they qualify. The supervisors commit $8,500, which allows people with certain income levels to get assistance with repairs on their property. There is nearly $80,000 available, but the work must be done by approved contractors.
— The public hearing on the former DHS (Bliss) building was held with no comments from the public. According to Young, the county attorney is working on the details for sale of the property.
Young said there are at least three potential processes: open bids, closed bids or an auction.
When details on the manner of disposal are available, there will be a public notice. This should be determined in the next few weeks, he said.
