It has taken nearly all summer to repair over 100 flags that have flown over Graceland Cemetery. Volunteers began working independently, taking flags home at one point, until they enlisted the aid of other friends who could sew and help with the repair work.

The enormous effort came to a close this week, as the final flags were presented to American Legion representatives Steve Struchen and Gene Williams. They will be taking the repaired flags and storing them until the next use.

The ladies began gathering at the Faith United Methodist Church to work on the flags, learning the proper size and way to repair the flags.

The American Legion representatives gave a presentation to the ladies to explain the ways to fold and store the flags when they are in private homes.

The flags that are repaired will be flying again during the next patriotic holiday, which will be Veterans Day in November.

The women who have worked on the flags come from different churches, but all had a willing heart to help with the project. They included LuAnne Jackson, Jean Fox, Barb Hassebrock, Charlotte Sherman, Rita Youngdale, Linda Olmstead, Wilma Neuring, Rusty Gaul, Becky Newman, Julie Maass, Linda Johnson, Marcia Corbin, Jann Anderson, Shirley Bowman and Janet Lowry.

45 flags were deemed too damage to repair.

Starting at $3.46/week.
