WC Fire rescues kayaker who fell into the Boone River
A kayaker survived falling into the burgeoning Boone River Saturday when she was rescued by members of the Webster City Fire Department.
Webster City Fire received a call around 5:30 p.m. saying there was someone on the river screaming for help. The woman, who was not identified, fell out of her kayak and was last seen near the Albright landing south of Webster City, according to Webster City Fire Chief Chuck Stansfield.
At the time, the river was running at approximately 7,440 cubic feet per second, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The water temperature was hovering in the low 60s, the USGS reported.
Stansfield said a WC Fire put a rescue boat in at Albright and found the woman, who was hanging on to her kayak and floating towards the Beaver river entrance. Firefighters Harrison Hayes, Cole Youngdale and Lieut. Todd Madsen were able to pull her into their boat and take her to safety, he said.
Kamrar Fire, Stratford Fire, Van Diest Medical, the Hamilton County Sheriff and Hamilton County Conservation had also responded to the emergency and had stationed at the Beaver landing just south of Albright, he said.
“Once on the ground, Kamrar EMS along with Van Diest Medical gave the patient care and transported the victim to the Van Diest Medical Center for further care and evaluation,” Stansfield added.
“The Boone River at that time was at a high level in the ‘Action’ stage having crested at over 10 feet, moving quickly, and dangerous to be on,” he said.
“This was a great example of Hamilton County’s emergency services working together for the good of our community.”
