Webster City man charged for using someone else’s Social Security number

A Webster City man is scheduled for a June 13 jury trial where he will face a felony charge for attempting to secure a motor vehicle title using identification that was not his.

Jaime Ariel Chilel Merida, 28, is charged with fraudulent practices in the second degree, a class D felony.

He filed a written plea of not guilty on March 20. He also waived his right to a speedy trial.

Chilel Merida is accused of listing a Social Security number that was not his on an application for a title in Hamilton County, according to the criminal complaint.

The criminal complaint was filed in February, but the incident is recorded as happening on January 3, 2024.

“On 1/3/2024 the suspect was issued Iowa title 40AB10648 at the Hamilton County Treasurer’s Office,” the criminal complaint states. “On the application he listed a social security number that was not issued to him.

“The defendant does not have legal status to be in the United States and cannot obtain an Iowa title due to no social security number.”

Chilel Merida lives at 730 Webster Street, Webster City, according to the complaint.
