Police say man’s wounds from July 2 shooting were self-inflicted

Cory Lee Joseph Cebula faces six charges

Webster City police arrested a 25-year-old man after an investigation revealed his wounds from a reported drive-by shooting on July 2 at a Webster City property were self-inflicted.

Cory Lee Joseph Cebula was arrested last week after what Webster City Police Chief Shiloh Mork called a “lengthy investigation” into the shooting incident at 408 Grove Street in Webster City.

Mork said investigators were able to conclude that Cebula had falsely reported being the victim of a drive-by shooting.

“The investigation revealed that Cebula had, in fact, shot himself and fabricated the story of being shot by an unknown assailant,” Mork said in a media release.

Cebula was arrested at the America’s Best Value Inn motel.

The exact date of the arrest was not disclosed in the July 14 media release. He faces six charges.

Cebula is a felon convicted of forgery in November 2020, according to Iowa Courts Online records.

He is now charged with the following:

. Dominion/control of firearm/offensive weapon by a felon, a class D felony.

. False report of indictable offense to a public entity, a serious misdemeanor.

. Possession of controlled substance-marijuana, a serious misdemeanor.

. Possession of controlled substance-methamphetamine, a serious misdemeanor.

. Discharging weapons within city limits, a simple misdemeanor.

. Possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.

A class D felony is punishable by a fine of at least $750 and no more than $7,500, as well as incarceration of not to exceed five years. A serious misdemeanor is punishable by a fine of at least $430 and no more than $2,560 as well as possible incarceration not to exceed one year. A simple misdemeanor is punishable by a fine of at least $105 and no more than $855 as well as possible incarceration not to exceed 30 days.

The Webster City Police Department was assisted in the investigation by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s and Hamilton County Attorney’s offices.

Prior to his arrest last week, Cebula was scheduled to face a non-jury trial Aug. 1 in Hamilton County, accused of assaulting a female victim on May 7.

Starting at $3.46/week.
