Murder suspect arrested

FORT DODGE – The man wanted for the murder of his estranged wife was arrested by local law enforcement early Thursday morning, according to the Fort Dodge Police Department.

The FDPD, Webster County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol responded to the area of Quail Avenue/P59 and Nelson Avenue just before 7 a.m. after receiving information of a suspicious male matching the description of Justin Christopher Hurdel.

Hurdel, 43, was wanted for the murder of his estranged wife, 38-year-old Maggie Hurdel. Maggie Hurdel died of a gunshot wound on Wednesday afternoon.

Law enforcement began to search the area just north of the junction of Highway 20 and County Road P59. Webster County Sheriff’s Office K9 Swamper was deployed to track the suspect.

A short while later, Justin Hurdel was tracked to a nearby shed where he was taken into custody without incident, according to the FDPD.

Justin Hurdel was transported to UnityPoint Health – Trinity Regional Medical Center for injuries sustained prior to his arrest. He will be booked into the Webster County Jail to await his initial appearance.
