STANHOPE — With warmer days predicted for the weekend, perhaps one of the best ways to beat the heat is with an ice-cold slice of watermelon. And Stanhope will be the place to be for watermelon.

The 62nd Stanhope Watermelon Day is set for Saturday, sponsored by the Stanhope Lions Club. The day begins with the big parade at 10:30 a.m. right through the heart of town. Parade categories include businesses, churches, clubs, horses, antiques and children. Cash prizes will be awarded, according to organizers.

Following the parade, the action moves to the city park. Rides, Bingo and the food stands open at 11 a.m. Kids can check out the inflatable attractions from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the Sugar Creek Cloggers will entertain at noon.

Also at noon, the softball tournament will resume on the ball diamond. The Seldom Seen Band will perform from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m.

At 1 p.m., serving of the free watermelon begins. Remember to bring your own fork. The serving will continue throughout the afternoon until closing or when the watermelon runs out.

Kids can also take part in the pedal tractor pull at 1 p.m. and the nickle scramble at 2 p.m.

Shelter Reality Drummers are returning once again to perform from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

At 3 p.m., walking tacos go on sale and at 3:45, the Hanson Family Jugglers will perform.

Tickle the Clown will be in the park throughout the afternoon.

Cash drawings will begin at 7 p.m. with a $500 winner, a $100 winner and six $25 winners. Tickets for the drawing can be purchased from any Lions Club member or during Watermelon Day. You need not be present to win.

In case of rain, activities will be held on Sunday.
