HCCPS to sponsor Hetland Cemetery Walk on June 28

— Submitted photo. The Hamilton County Cemetery Preservation Society will have a walk through Hetland Cemetery from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 28.

Hetland Cemetery is one of seven pioneer cemeteries in Hamilton County.

In a recent announcement from the Hamilton County Cemetery Preservation Society (HCCPS), there will be a cemetery walk at the Hetland Cemetery from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28, 2023.

The public is invited to attend and the event is free. Parking is along the side of the gravel road; consider parking on the south side of the road.

Be sure and leave adequate clearance for vehicles to get past the parked cars.

The program will feature information on pioneer Iowa cemeteries and cemetery headstones, HCCPS organizational goals, and information on a few of the area pioneers buried in Hetland Cemetery.

Most of those buried at the Hetland Cemetery were born in Norway or born to Norwegian immigrants, migrating to Iowa after a stop in Illinois. The immigrants came from a variety of locations in Norway including Hetland, Stavanger, Lillehammer, Rogaland, Torvastad, Haugesand, and Vikingstad.

Hetland Cemetery, also known as Rorem or South Cemetery, was deeded to the Hetland Grave Yard Association in 1858. There are approximately 55 burials beginning in 1882, with the last burial in 1984.

The first burial was of Mads Madson in 1882.

Hetland Cemetery is a grass lot on a slope. Bring a lawn chair if you would like to sit. However, there is no shade.
