MARVIN MIDLAND

Marvin Midland passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at the Southfield Assisted Living in Webster City. He was there less than 24 hours after leaving his beloved home of over 50 years.

Marvin Lee Midland was born at home on March 30, 1937 to Harry and Irene (Long) Midland at Eagle Grove, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church. Marvin attended school in Eagle Grove and graduated in 1955. He attended Junior College in Eagle Grove

On August 9, 1959, he married Dorothy Jean Opheim of Thor at Ullensvang Lutheran Church. The couple moved to Ames where Marvin attended Iowa State University, graduating in 1961. He received his master’s degree in Industrial Education in 1968.

Following Marv’s graduation from ISU, the family moved to Webster City in 1961. He taught Industrial Education at the Webster City Junior and Senior High Schools from 1961 to 1996 and taught Drivers Education in Webster City during the summers for many years.

Marvin and Dorothy opened their home to many foster children over the years. He served on various committees at Trinity Lutheran Church, was a member of the National Education Association and the Iowa State Education Association. Marvin enjoyed ushering at Iowa State football games for over 30 years and following Cyclone sports. He enjoyed traveling, wood working, wood carving, stained glass and enjoyed making gifts for others. In recent years, Marv went to Hy-Vee in the morning for coffee with his friends. Marvin loved his wife and family, teaching and all his friends in Webster City.

He is survived by sons, Richard Midland of Mukilteo, WA; David Midland of Council Bluffs, IA (Jean Huisman Midland) and Joshua Midland of Dakota Dunes, SD; Gary and Kim (Meints) Midland, Connor and Collin of Faribault, MN; foster daughter, Linda Downs and Alexandria Downs and Ali’s daughter Persephone (Perci) all of Fort Dodge, IA; brother, Dale and Pat Midland of Maryville, MO; two nephews and great-nieces, great nephews and cousins. Marvin was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy in 2019 and his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at Foster Funeral & Cremation Center. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The service will be livestreamed on the funeral home Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be given to Trinity Lutheran Church.
