FORT DODGE – The season ended for the Webster City girls tennis team on Wednesday.

The Lynx dropped a 5-0 decision to North Central Conference rival St. Edmond in a Class 1A, Region 3 semifinal. The meet was held indoors at the Fort Dodge Tennis Club due to rainy conditions.

Natalie Segar, Gabbie Sebert, Chloe Bakken, Abigail Heckert and Elizabeth Van Demark dropped singles matches in straight sets, allowing the Gaels to clinch the dual. St. Edmond will face Pella in the regional final on Saturday.

"Give a ton of credit to St. Edmond, as (Gael head coach) Shawn (Neverman) has a really solid group again this year, especially at the top," WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. "He's done a fantastic job of developing those girls; they played great tennis.

"For our girls, it's always hard when it's the last match of the year. You always hate to lose, and you never want the season to end. You just hope that you can go down fighting, competing and playing your best tennis."

Heckert claimed five games in her No. 4 singles match, while Bakken and Van Demark each won three. Sebert scored two and Segar one off a state singles qualifier in Chloe Palmer.

"I was proud of our seniors," Fisher said. "They were up for any adjustment we needed to make, they competed and they never gave up, It was also a great example for our younger players of just the way you need to approach every match."

Webster City finished this past season 6-8 overall.
