A ball-control offense and four turnovers forced by the defense helped Webster City secure a 21-7 victory over Humboldt here Friday night.
Kaleb Hansen had two short rushing scores and Coyce Bertran added one, as the Lynx earned their 68th win over the Wildcats in the 110th all-time meeting between North Central Conference rivals.
Hansen's first two-yard TD run capped off a drive that took up nearly 10 minutes of the first quarter, finishing with 87 yards rushing on 29 carries. Bertran added 48 yards rushing and Grayson Simonton had 35.
On that initial drive, Hansen – a senior – ran for 47 yards on 11 rushes, with Alex Staley hitting Grant Arends on a key 6-yard pass on fourth-and-4 to keep the series going.
"Anytime you are able to put together an 18-play drive that takes 10 minutes off the clock, it's going to really help your football team," WCHS head coach Andy Brim said. "Starting the game that way helped set the tone.
"I'm just really proud of our kids and coaches. They have stuck to our process and it paid off for them."
Bertran and Simonton each picked off passes, with Arends and Edwin Ramos Nolasco both recovering fumbles for Webster City (1-4 overall, 1-0 in Class 3A, District 1). Arends also broke up a pair of passes by Humboldt (0-5, 0-1).
Arends recovered his fumble on the first snap of the second half, and Hansen capped off a five-minute drive with his second touchdown run. Bertran added his score late in the fourth after the Webster City defense forced a turnover on downs.
John Wilwerding had a team-high five tackles. Boston Farley recorded 4.5 and Arends had four.
Israel Torres was 3-for-3 on extra-point attempts and had a 55-yard punt.
"We did a fantastic job of playing disciplined team defense and carrying out our gameplan," Brim said. "When you do that, more times than not, you will end up with a few takeaways."
The Lynx head to Sioux Center on Friday.
