Webster City girls compete in regional tennis tournament

BOONE – The Webster City girls tennis team took part in a Class 1A regional tournament for singles and doubles here on Wednesday.

In singles, Chloe Bakken advanced to the quarterfinals before coming up short against a player from North Polk. Bakken earned a pair of wins on the day.

Abby Heckert also took part in the singles draw, falling in her first match.

Natalie Segar and Gabbie Sebert picked up a win in the doubles bracket. They were knocked out in the second round against the No. 2 seed from Ballard.

Haylee Ades and Ava Otteros were also entered into doubles, dropping an opening round match.

"Chloe probably had the best day of anyone," WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. "She showed a lot of flashes of what the future holds for her. She's going to be a tough out because of her confidence and consistency.

"Abby drew the No. 2 seed right out of the gates and played very tough. Hayee and Ava also drew a seed. I thought they had their chances but just weren't as sharp as they needed to be. Natalie and Gabbie got a nice win over a team from Creston before falling in the second round."

State qualifiers from the regional in singles were Maiya Phanchantraurai of Boone and Bella Lu from Carroll. Boone's Maria Ernesti and Kate Kelly claimed the doubles title, with Ballard's Harley Askelsen and Norah Mudd finishing second.

Webster City heads to Saydel for team regionals on Saturday.
