LAKE CITY – The South Hamilton football team dropped a district opener here Friday night to South Central Calhoun, 36-15.
The Titans used big plays in the first half to take control of the contest, building a 24-0 halftime advantage. In the fourth, Wyatt Gelder got the Hawks on the board, breaking free from 60 yards out for a score.
South Hamilton would add another touchdown later in the fourth when Maddox Becker punched one in.
"We came out flat," South Hamilton head coach Cole Billerbeck said. "We weren't ready for the physicality of South Central Calhoun. They ran hard and their line got after it.
"We kind of took it on the chin in the first half."
Gelder ran for 95 yards on 11 carries with the score, as Becker added 21 yards. Benjamin Swenson had eight tackles with a sack, as Gelder tallied 8.5 stops.
Garrett Johnson ran in a two-point conversion and John Sandgren was successful on an extra point kick.
"We picked it up after halftime, forcing them to punt on their first drive," Billerbeck said. "Unfortunately, we muffed the punt and they took advantage.
"I was proud of how we kept fighting through the whole game. We just need to come ready to play every game."
The schedule does not get any easier for South Hamilton, as they host East Sac County for Homecoming on Friday at Taylor Field.
