FORT DODGE – The Webster City girls tennis team gained some key momentum here Wednesday at the North Central Conference Tournament.
The Lynx finished fourth overall, as the doubles team of Haylee Ades and Ava Otteros finished a team-best second.
"Really proud of our girls both today and this year in general," said Webster City head coach Mark Fisher. "I always like to use the NCC as a barometer for how much we’ve improved over the year, and whether through practice yesterday, or what we saw today, these girls have improved a lot.
"They competed today, they learned a lot today, and they played with great attitudes. Hopefully this helps to springboard many of them into postseason play, and for the younger ones, into next year."
Natalie Segar and Gabbie Sebert were third in the top doubles flight, as Abby Heckert finished fourth in the second singles flight and Chloe Bakken was sixth in the top singles flight.
Ades and Otteros, the No. 3 seed in the second doubles flight, knocked off No. 2 seed Emmalyn DeWeese and Hailey Carpenter of Iowa Falls-Alden in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-3, to advance. They fell in the finals to top seed Gracey Smith and Paige Geitzenauer from Clear Lake, 7-5, 6-2.
In the first round, Ades and Otteros topped a doubles team from Hampton-Dumont/CAL in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Segar and Sebert rebounded from a loss in the semis to a pair from Clear Lake to defeat Isabelle Janssen and Liza Campbell of Iowa Falls-Alden for third, 3-6, 6-2 (10-5). They also posted a straight-set win in the first round over a duo from Charles City, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
Heckert scored a 6-0, 6-0 win in her opener over Chloe Blickenderfer of Charles City before falling to eventual bracket winner Abby Huss of St. Edmond in the semis and Lauryn Coleman from Clear Lake for third.
Bakken earned a consolation round win over Delilah McGuire of Hampton-Dumont/CAL, 6-1, 6-1, coming up short vs. Clear Lake's Nora Dye for fifth. The eighth-grader also claimed five games off St. Edmond No. 1 Chloe Palmer in the opening round.
