IOWA FALLS – The Webster City football team opened the season here last Friday with a tough 32-5 setback to North Central Conference rival Iowa Falls-Alden.
The Lynx (0-1 overall) were unable to erase an early deficit, as the Cadets scored a touchdown in the first and another in the second around a 21-yard field goal by Israel Torres.
In the third, Iowa Falls-Alden got a pair of touchdowns, adding another in the fourth. Webster City's final points came on a safety in the fourth.
"The kids played hard and never quit," WCHS head coach Andy Brim said. "That will help a lot as we get back to work to improve from Week 1 to Week 2."
Coyce Bertran ran for 82 yards on 13 carries, with Kaleb Hansen rushing 22 times for 62 yards. Alex Staley added 39 yards on the ground, completing a 29-yard pass to Grayson Simonton.
Bertan had a 15-yard completion to Grant Arends.
Torres averaged over 46 yards on five punt attempts and had a touchback on one of his two kickoffs.
"As a coach, I must do a better job of preparing the team to play," Brim said. "Hats off to Iowa Falls-Alden, who played hard and executed well."
Arends led the defense with seven tackles, including six solo stops, as Torres and Boston Farley each had 5.5 tackles. Torres had 2.5 tackles for loss with a sack, as Peyton Weisberg also recorded a sack.
Arends forced a fumble that was recovered by Hansen.
Karsen Kalouis threw for 129 yards and ran for 101 with two touchdowns to lead the Cadets. Jack Duit and Cruz Burroughs each had rushing scores.
The Lynx head to Fort Dodge on Friday night. The Dodgers topped Mason City last week, 36-6.
