MARSHALLTOWN – The Webster City cross country team had two runners finish in the Top-20 here last Thursday night at the 18th Marshalltown Invitational.
The Lynx finished fifth overall, as Pella Christian captured team gold followed by Carlisle and the host Bobcats. Daniel Murillo-Delfin paced Webster City, placing 17th overall in 18:46.
Aiden Wardell was 21st in a time of 19:05, as Max Barrick finished 27th in 19:56. Jordan Betts was 37th, with Grayson Henderson, Tariq Burton and Cade Kruger finishing 40th-42nd.
Marshalltown's Preston Johnson won the race in 16:29.
Webster City ran four juniors in Murillo-Delfin, Betts, Henderson and Burton, a sophomore in Wardell, a ninth-grader in Kruger and an eighth-grader in Barrick.
"A strong start to the year for us overall," WCHS head coach Derek Turner said. "We knew our boys team would have a ton of competition for those last few spots, and it turned out that way. Daniel and Aiden led us with strong contributions from some of our new faces.
"I'm really proud of how we competed."
Newton won the girls team title, as the Lynx were eighth overall behind Izzy Grossoehme, who finished in 17th. Des Moines Roosevelt's Isabel Spradling was the race winner, clocking a time of 19:26.
Grossoehme, a senior, was clocked at 23:04. Lyla Brookshire, an eighth-grader, finished 37th in 25:25, with junior Rubi Andrade-Murillo placing 47th in 27:08.
Quynn Pruismann was 49th, Haedyn Soesbee finished 51st, Mckenna Buakham was 52nd and Marlen Saavedra-Mendoza finished 54th. Pruismann is a freshman, Soesbee and Buakham are juniors, and Saavedra-Mendoza is a sophomore.
"Izzy once again ran a great race, with Lyla doing the same," Turner said. "Our girls team is minutes ahead in most cases compared to last year at this time and I'm excited to see how we progress throughout the rest of the season."
In junior varsity action, Tanner Lenning was 36th and Matthew Lammers 60th for the boys. Lily Mourlam led the girls, as she placed 26th.
The Lynx return to action on Tuesday when they host the Webster City Invitational at the Links Public Golf Course.
