Webster City bounces back at Clarion

CLARION — The Webster City continues to show an ability to bounce right back, doing so with a convincing 11-3 victory in five innings over Clarion-Goldfield/Dows here Wednesday.

The Lynx scored in the first, only to see the Cowgirls respond by taking a 3-1 lead.

It was all Webster City after, as they scored three in the second, two in the third and fourth innings, and three in the fifth.

Morgan Hackbarth and Hayden McCoy each had two hits, as McCoy, Jaylyn Bahrenfuss and Morgan Tempel each drove in two runs.

Hackbarth, McCoy and Briley VanDeer each scored two runs. Hackbarth also stole three bases, with Tessa Hansen swiping two.

Jakaela Cherry picked up the win, striking out six with four hits allowed.

“We struggled the first inning to find our rhythm at the plate, but we did a good job manufacturing a run to get up right away,” WCHS head coach Brad VanDeer said. “Clarion came out ready to go and strung together a bunch of hits in the first inning and put three runs up. We did a great job of keeping our focus, became more disciplined and patient at the plate the rest of the game.

“Jakaela really locked in and mixed her pitches well to keep them off the bases and never really gave them a chance after the first. The defense was very solid again.”

The Lynx closed out the week with a 3-2 loss to Pocahontas Area. Tempel had both hits, scoring a run, as Cherry had an RBI and struck out four batters.

“We came out ready to go. Put the pressure on them right away with two runs, but couldn’t find a way to string anything together after,” VanDeer said. “We’ve been hitting the ball well, so I’m a little perplexed as to our approach at the plate. It seemed we were guessing and hoping instead of being aggressive.

“I think we can get that fixed pretty quick. The defense played well for much of the game, but it’s tough to win games without scoring.”

Webster City hosts No. 11 (Class 3A) Clear Lake on Monday and is at fifth-ranked (1A) St. Edmond on Wednesday before hosting No. 15 (3A) Algona Friday night.

They end the week at the Roland-Story Classic on Saturday vs. No. 2 (1A) Mason City Newman and Roland-Story.

Starting at $3.46/week.
