The Webster City softball team dropped three games to close out this past week, including two to ranked teams.
After falling to No. 11 (Class 3A) Algona this past Friday night in North Central Conference action, 9-1, the Lynx dropped a 13-5 decision to Roland-Story and suffered a 7-3 setback to fifth-ranked (1A) Mason City Newman. Both of those games took place Saturday from the Roland-Story Classic.
“We got behind early with some shaky defense (vs. Roland-Story). We let a couple awful calls get in our way and couldn’t regroup,” WCHS head coach Brad VanDeer said. “We had routine plays to get out of some jams that we normally make and didn’t.
“We played pretty well against Mason City Newman throughout. It was base running problems this time around. I like the kids to be aggressive, but we also have to be smart.”
Webster City held a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the fifth vs. the Norsemen before they scored nine to take the contest. Hayden McCoy drove in three runs and Amanda Lahr had two hits.
Jakaela Cherry plated two runs vs. Mason City Newman, as Morgan Tempel recorded a triple. Briley VanDeer struck out six batters.
“(Against Algona) we did not come out ready,” VanDeer said. “We were flat and Algona is a very good team. We knew that, but something just wasn’t clicking.”
Tempel and Alivia Burns each had two hits vs. Algona, as Burns recorded a double. Tempel scored the lone run.
Webster City heads to Hampton-Dumont/CAL on Monday night.
