HUMBOLDT — The Webster City baseball team scored a sweep over Humboldt in a pair of high-scoring North Central Conference games here Monday night.
Scores were 10-8 and 9-8.
The Lynx took an early 8-4 lead with a five-run third in the first game, holding off a rally by the Wildcats.
Braylon Dyvig was 3-for-3 with three RBI, Jaxon Griffith was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, Alex Staley had two hits and scored three times, and Syrus Willard had a pair of runs with an RBI.
Carter Mickelson and Kaleb Hansen each drove in a run.
Dyvig pitched five innings, striking out three, as Mickelson recorded five outs, three by strikeout.
“It definitely was a rival game, as Humboldt is always well coached and do things the right way, but our boys decided to get back to basics between the ears a bit,” WCHS head coach Adison Kehoe said. “Meaning go out and enjoy the game and play to win, not play to not lose, which is a vast difference.
“Carter Mickelson coming in to save the first game and get the win in the second, from where his career started to now, just a full circle moment for a senior being a model. The boys play for each other, and that’s what we have wanted and preached for Webster City baseball.”
In the nightcap, Webster City (15-2 overall, 7-1 in league) won it in the bottom of the fifth with two runs, as Griffith plated Willard to tie it and Dyvig drove in Staley with two outs.
Griffith had four RBI and a homer, as Mickelson and Staley both scored twice.
Matthew Tesdahl picked up seven strikeouts on the mound and Mickelson had three in three innings.
The Lynx host Boone on Friday before heading to Saydel Saturday for the Jim Gebhart Tournament where they will play Van Meter at 12:15 p.m. and the host Eagles at 2:30 p.m.
