The Webster City softball team got in the win column here last Friday night, besting Clarion-Goldfield/Dows in North Central Conference play, 9-2.
“I thought we bounced back extremely well (from Tuesday,” said Webster City head coach Brad VanDeer. “I thought our energy level was much better from the onset.
“We were able to start the game by retiring their first three batters and then responded by executing at the plate and scoring in the first. That gave us a lot of confidence going forward and it showed as we used our baserunning to put pressure on their defense.”
The Lynx scored in all but one inning in which they came to the plate, belting out 13 hits on the night to improve to 1-1 on the season.
Morgan Tempel was a single shy of hitting for the cycle, going 4-for-4 with a homer, a triple and two doubles. She drove in three runs and scored once.
Alivia Burns was also 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three steals, as Izzy Weinschenk had two RBI and Jaylyn Bahrenfuss scored twice and stole two bases.
Hayden McCoy, who had a triple, drove in a run and scored a run, with Tessa Hansen stealing three bases.
“We spent a little more time in practice the last couple of days running the bases, and I was very pleased with their aggressiveness,” VanDeer said. “I also challenged the girls in practice the last couple of days to be more intentional with their hitting routines and to their credit they were much better at the plate.
“On the defensive side, I was very impressed with how we played. We had everybody engaged in all the plays and moving in the right places. We didn’t make anything easy for Clarion or hand them any extra offense.”
Inside the circle, Briley VanDeer struck out 10 and scattered four hits, allowing just one earned run.
