The Webster City softball team picked up another signature win on Monday, knocking off 11th-ranked (Class 3A) by a final of 3-2.

With the victory, the Lynx (10-9 overall) went over the .500 mark on the season, handing the Lions (18-4) just their second North Central Conference loss.

“Our execution was on point,” said WCHS head coach Brad VanDeer. “We made all the right decisions with the ball defensively and didn’t allow Clear Lake to score any runs due to us guessing with the ball.

“We worked primarily on communication at practice and it definitely showed up during the game.”

Briley VanDeer picked up the win from the circle, while Jakaela Cherry came in for the save.

“Briley was on her game pitching-wise, and the defense was just as good,” VanDeer said. “We had a few mistakes, but we always had people in the right spot picking each other up and limiting the damage. It’s really fun when you can feel the energy coming from the kids, and you can tell they are all about making plays for each other.

“That is very much what won the game for us: our ability to make plays for each other, picking each other up both offensively and defensively.”

The big hit of the night came from Jaylyn Bahrenfuss, who slugged a home run in the sixth inning to give the Lynx the lead for good.

“Jaylyn’s homer in the sixth inning was obviously the difference maker, and her getting to experience the thrill of it being the go-ahead shot with her teammates is something special for all of them,” VanDeer said. “We still have a big week ahead with another ranked team in St. Edmond coming up on Wednesday.”

Webster City faces the NCC co-leading Gaels (19-6) at 7:30 p.m. in Fort Dodge.

Starting at $3.46/week.
