HUMBOLDT — The Webster City softball team kept momentum rolling with a 9-5 victory over Humboldt in North Central Conference play here Monday night.
Leading 6-4 entering the seventh, the Lynx put the game away with three runs, as Briley VanDeer, Izzy Weinschenk and Hayden McCoy all had RBI hits.
Jaylyn Bahrenfuss, VanDeer and Haydin Sealine all had two hits, as VanDeer and Sealine each drove in a pair. Bahrenfuss scored three times on the night.
Over the weekend, Webster City knocked off top-ranked (Class 4A) Carlisle and finished the Dave Hilton Classic with a perfect 2-0 record after topping Saydel.
“I was very anxious to see how we would start the week after having a lot of success this weekend and how the girls would handle it,” WCHS head coach Brad VanDeer said. “They came out and performed just how I hoped. It was very encouraging to see the amount of focus and attention to detail that we had. Sometimes it is easy to feel like you have made it after having some success, but the girls definitely feel they are far from where they want to be come July.
“It feels good as a coach to know the players are playing to be better and better each night. We weren’t as clean defensiviley as we were on Saturday, but that is hard to duplicate night after night. The impressive thing was that they snapped back and corrected mistakes instantly. It is definitely a sign of growth and keeps us on the path we want to be on.”
Morgan Tempel added an RBI and a run scored, as Jakaela Cherry picked up the win with three strikeouts inside the circle.
“On the offensive side, we were very aggressive,” VanDeer said. “We left a few runs out there, but Humboldt also made some really nice plays to take some things away from us. We used the seventh inning to put some distance between us in the score column, which made it a lot easier to execute in the bottom half of the inning. I was also very happy with the bottom half of our order.
“Haydin Sealine, Briley VanDeer, Jaylyn Bahrenfuss, Izzy Weinschenk and Hayden McCoy each had terrific at bats and helped us score some key runs late in the game.”
The win by Webster City ended a three-game run by Humboldt in the series.
Up next for the Lynx will be Clarion-Goldfield/Dows on Wednesday in Clarion.
