The stars aligned for the Webster City softball program here on Saturday during the Dave Hilton Classic.
One night after falling to top-ranked (Class 4A) Carlisle, the Lynx scored a stunning 4-2 victory over the Wildcats.
The win marked the first vs. Carlisle since the 1993 season, when Webster City was led by Hilton — the Hall of Fame coach. That team also featured a pitcher-catcher combination of Jenny (Wirtz) Ayers and Linda (Crystal) Lahr.
Thirty-three years later, it was the daughter duo of pitcher Jakaela Cherry and catcher Amanda Lahr working the battery for the landmark win.
After Carlisle scored in the first, it was Webster City tying it in the second before taking the lead with two in the fourth and one in the fifth.
Cherry had two hits and drove in a run, pitching all seven innings with three strikeouts, just three hits allowed and no walks. Lahr had two doubles and reached on a walk.
Tessa Hansen scored twice, while Briley VanDeer and Tessi Farley each scored a run.
“After the game on Friday — where we started off really well and just kind of took it on the chin — we were a little disappointed,” WCHS head coach Brad VanDeer said. “The girls wanted more out of themselves and wanted to prove Friday’s version wasn’t who they wanted to be and isn’t who they are.
“Jakaela was very much in control of her pitching, and the defense played just as well.”
Alivia Burns had a hit, as did Jaylyn Bahrenfuss and VanDeer.
“To beat the No. 1 team in 4A is a huge accomplishment and something we can use to remind ourselves of the type of team we want to strive to be every single night,” Coach VanDeer said. “I think the best feeling of the day Saturday for me was how we responded after the win. Going against Saydel, we played with the same mindset as we started the day off with.”
The Lynx had lost 21 games to Carlisle since 2008, including a 10-0 defeat on Friday. Morgan Tempel had a double and Lahr recorded the other hit in that contest.
Webster City also picked up a 4-1 victory over Saydel to conclude the Hilton Classic on Saturday. Tempel had two hits with a double and VanDeer earned the win inside the circle, striking out five.
Last Thursday, the Lynx earned a 5-4 win over Iowa Falls-Alden in North Central Conference play in eight innings. Morgan Hackbarth was 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a double. VanDeer had the game-winning RBI when she plated Hackbarth to cap a three-run eighth.
Lahr’s home run in the bottom of the eighth tied the contest.
Tempel also scored two runs. Webster City had seven different players steal bases and Cherry picked up the win, striking out seven.
“Amanda has worked so hard and for her to have that moment, I’m just really excited for her,” VanDeer said. “The entire team competed all the way through and pulled out another exciting win. We had several players performing in clutch moments, which just goes to show we are making growth.”
The Lynx will head to Humboldt on Monday with first pitch set for 7:30 p.m.
