Quintet of Webster City girls headed to state

CLEAR LAKE — The Webster City girls track and field team captured a handful of bids to the state meet here last Thursday at a Class 3A qualifier hosted by Clear Lake.

The Lynx placed fourth overall with 78 points. Decorah was first followed by the Lions and Humboldt.

Izzy Grossoehme earned two of those automatic bids to Des Moines, winning the 400 in 58.90 and placing second in the 200 in 26.83. She also ran the anchor on the first place sprint medley.

Kali Hartnett, Izzy Weinschenk and Tessa Hansen completed that relay, which turned in a time of 1:50.30.

The shuttle hurdle relay of Briley VanDeer, Hartnett, Tristyn Wright and Hansen earned a spot in state with a runner-up finish in 1:09.81. Amanda Lahr landed an at-large bid in the shot put.

“I am really proud of the effort and desire he girls showed,” WCHS head coach Tyler Mosbach said. “Qualifying as much as you can is always the goal. We were pretty close to getting everything that had a chance to get in. What was equally impressive was the team atmosphere that we had.

“Girls were there supporting each other, celebrating each other and working for each other. I couldn’t ask for better on that front.”

Weinschenk was third in the 100, going 13.39, as Hansen placed third in the 400 hurdles in 1:10.82. Avery Poppen was fourth in the discus (106-1) and Lahr fifth in the shot put (37-5). VanDeer added a sixth in the 100 hurdles (17.02).

The 4×200 relay of Hartnett, Weinschenk, Wright and Quinn Ruba finished third in 1:53.02 and the 4×100 of Harnett, Weinschenk, Grossoehme and Hansen went 51.66 for fourth.
