No. 10 Broncos fight off Webster City boys

BELMOND — The Webster City boys soccer team pushed North Central Conference leader and No. 10 (Class 2A) Wright County for 80 minutes here Monday night.

In the end, the Broncos remained unbeaten with a 3-0 victory.

“To be honest, we played right with them. We just struggled to find a quality opportunity,” WCHS head coach Craig Signorin said. “We need to do a better job in the offensive third in looking to connect and finishing off chances. Goals change the momentum of the game, and you can’t change the momentum if you can’t score.”

Wright County (11-0-3 overall, 7-0-3 in the NCC) scored twice in the opening half and again in the second, as Anir Akdim, Jorge Luis Guzman and Jerry Hernandez each found the back of the net. Hernandez and Angel Cortes both recorded an assist.

The Broncos had 13 shots, as seven were on target against Lynx (5-2-2, 5-2-2) keeper Brandon Burney. The freshman tallied four saves in net.

Webster City, meanwhile, peppered Juan Ulises Medina with 17 shots, including seven on goal, but Medina was able to stop all of them. David Villelas had eight shots, four of which were on goal, as Jaime Martinez Andrial had three, with two on goal.

“Their first two goals (for the Broncos) were outstanding, but we also were timid by giving them the time and space to do so,” Signorin said. “We also were slightly out of our shape during the second goal. To have seven quality corners taken and not score on one is frustrating as well.

“(Wright County) has a lot of talent from each school, but it takes a lot of work on (head coach Ethan Krogman’s) part to put those pieces together.”

In the first meeting between the Lynx and Broncos, the match ended in a scoreless draw.

Webster City hosts Hampton-Dumont/CAL on Thursday. The match begins at 5:30 p.m. at Lynx Field.

Starting at $3.46/week.
