CLEAR LAKE — The Webster City boys track and field team put together a strong performance here Thursday night at a Class 3A state qualifying meet.

The Lynx finished fourth overall with 85 points — just three points behind Nevada for third. Clear Lake won on the boys’ side, with Decorah placing second.

Justin Callahan and Jaxon Griffith both secured automatic bids to the state meet in Des Moines later this week, as each placed second in hurdle events. Griffith, Kaleb Hansen, Rylan Stroner and Daniel Murillo-Delfin won the distance medley to join them, with the sprint medley doing the same by scoring silver.

Callahan added an at-large bid in the 400-meter dash, as did the 4×400-meter relay.

“I am extremely happy with how we prepared and handled the weather delay,” WCHS head coach Chad Hisler said. “Once again, these guys stepped up with season and lifetime bests across the board.

“We had a great senior class this year with 12 guys that bought into our program and provided great leadership in Jack Barner, Justin Callahan, Ben Youngdale, Arlen Lake, Gavin Wynkoop, Jaxon Griffith, Addison Punkham, Hunter Vue, Aiden Hrnicek, Beau Nohrenberg, Cole Nohrenberg and Gabe Thumma.”

Callahan clocked a time of 54.13 in the 400 hurdles for his silver, as Griffith went 15.37 in the 110 hurdles for his. The distance medley relay turned in a winning time of 3:36.07.

Griffith, Hansen, Stroner and Callahan went 1:32.28 for second in the sprint medley relay.

The time by Callahan in the 400 hurdles gave him another school record, breaking the previous mark set by Garrett Whitmore of 54.17 in 2019. The sprint medley relay also broke their own previous school mark.

Callahan was also third in the 400 in 50.30, with the 4×400 of Stroner, Murillo-Delfin, Hansen and Callahan placing third in 3:25.27. Gabe Thumma Kaleb Draeger, Jack Barner and Arlen Lake took third in 9:08.79 in the 4×800.

The 4×100 of Griffith, Torres, Aiden Hrnicek and Luke Blake was fourth in 44.65, as did the 4×200 of Torres, Hrnicek, Dane Hansen and Blake in 1:37.52.
