Lynx boys exact revenge on St. Edmond in tennis
After falling to St. Edmond in dual action earlier this year, the Webster City boys tennis team avenged that defeat with an 8-1 victory here Monday evening.
The Lynx won four matches that went to super-tiebreaker sets in addition to straight-set singles wins from Nathan Wardell, Sage Bock and Fabian Ferto-Holdgrafer.
“Proud of the grit and fight the boys showed,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “Just a great team win. To go 4-for-4 in third-set tiebreakers and come up big on so many big points was a testament to the toughness they showed.
“It was also good to see the improvements we have made since the last time we played St. Edmond.”
Wardell posted a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at No. 1 singles over Ethan Cibert, Bock bested Grant Anderson at No. 2, 7-5, 6-3, and Ferto-Holdgrafer earned a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 6 over Alex Hayes.
Blake Arjes, Max Anderson and James Elliott were all victorious in the super-tiebreaker sets after splitting the first two sets of their singles matches.
In doubles, Wardell and Bock scored a 7-5, 6-4 sweep at No. 1, with Arjes and Anderson winning in another super-tiebreaker.
“I know and can see the improvements we are making, but sometimes when you’re in it on a day-to-day basis, it’s not always as obvious to you,” Fisher said. “One of the best things that came out of the — beyond the wins — was I had several people come up to me during the meet to talk about how much improvement they have seen in the boys this season.
“Just proud of the work this group has continued to do this season.”
