Lynx boys close regular season with draw

GARNER — The Webster City boys soccer team played Garner-Hayfield/Ventura to a 2-2 draw here last Thursday night.

David Villelas and Jesus Gael Mendoza Ruiz each had a goal for the Lynx (9-2-3 overall, 9-2-3 in the North Central Conference). Franky Bernal and Abisai Ramirez-Carmona each recorded an assist.

“One the most solid first 30 minutes we have played this year,” WCHS head coach Craig Signorin said. “And by far the best team goal based on our build up that we have had all year. We kept it for 8-to-10 passes from back to front, got a great switch to Franky in space. He hit it one time and found David, who finished it off with a volley.

“The last 10 was unfortunately ugly. Out of our shape and sloppy, which lead to a free kick and 1-to-2 missed clearances.”

Webster City tallied 19 shots, with 11 coming on goal. They also had eight corners on the night.

“Dominant second half, we just couldn’t find the back of the net,” Signorin said. “A lot of shots off target and at the keeper instead of finding a corner or even the frame. Didn’t react to a 40-yard long ball, let it go over our heads and they were able to slot it passed Brandon (Burney).

“Tough one to take with as many opportunities we had and limited them to. Thought Garner-Hayfield/Ventura battled all night.”

The Lynx now prepare for a meeting with Central Iowa United on Monday in a Class 2A, Substate 2 quarterfinal in Webster City.

Starting at $3.46/week.
