The Webster City boys soccer team scored a 2-0 victory over Clear Lake in the final regular season home match here Monday evening.
Aaron Mendoza and David Villelas each found the back of the net for the Lynx (8-2-2 overall, 8-2-2 in the North Central Conference). Brandon Burney recorded a clean sheet in net with five saves.
“Physical game right from the start — but that’s what you expect from Webster City and Clear Lake. It’s always a battle,” WCHS head coach Craig Signorin said. “As I mentioned previously, it’s extremely hard to hold on to a 1-0 lead with any team you play, and it was great to see the boys respond to that by giving us a little bit of comfort with a 2-0 cushion.”
Mendoza got Webster City on the board four minutes into the match, as Villelas added a second goal in the 50th. Abisai Ramirez-Carmona was credited with an assist, as the Lynx tallied seven shots, with five on target.
Mendoza, Ramirez-Carmona and Francisco Revolorio Guinac each had two shots.
“Aaron hit an outstanding free kick to put us up 1-0 after a handball outside the box,” Signorin said. “He nearly did it again in the second half, but it found the crossbar and just barely came out instead of deflecting down. That gave us a little momentum, but once Clear Lake got settled down, I thought they controlled the last 20 minutes of the first half.
“At the break, they were pleased with their play until I asked them how that felt to be dominated for 20 minutes straight. The smiles went away, but it also made them come out and respond by finding the back of the net again in the first 10. Abisai found David and he went through Clear Lake’s back line with a great finish at the near post. Abisai, Mingo, Grayson, Geo and Gael were stingy yet again in protecting our goalkeeper.”
Earlier this year, the Lions (7-3-3, 6-3-3) earned a 1-0 victory over Webster City, snapping a eight-match win streak in the series by the Lynx.
