The Webster City girls soccer team heads into the stretch run of the season looking to regain momentum.

Earlier this week, the Lynx fell to Clear Lake, 4-3, and battled Boone to a 3-3 draw. They welcome in Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Thursday before closing things out next week at Charles City and vs. Fort Dodge.

Janey Putney tallied a hat trick in the draw with Boone, recording two goals in the final 40 minutes of the match. Sandra Fuentes-Cruz had an assist, as Megan VanDeer had three saves in net.

Putney had a goal vs. Clear Lake and Jayme Perez registered two assists. VanDeer had nine saves against the Lions.

“We’re at the point where we seem to get every season where we lose key players to injury/illness and it makes games like this, that are very winable, to ending in a loss or tie,” WCHS head coach Kristine Mason said. “That was the case with both Clear Lake and Boone.

“The silver lining is that we have more players getting more minutes and we can start to see what the future looks like. We have a lot of great subs with Carmen who is starting to make a case for a starting position and Marlene and Val have both stepped up in times of need and had great minutes.

“The healthy kids are giving their everything for all 80 minutes and that is all we can ask of them. Janey is playing at a collegiate level right now and just having the season of a lifetime. For her, and seniors Jayme, Ashlee, Julia, Heidi, and Naomi who wanted this season to go differently, we are heartbroken. These kids are the backbone of the culture of this team and put the work in day in and day out and in the offseason. They deserve more than what the record shows.”

Starting at $3.46/week.
