The Webster City girls soccer team got back on track in a big way here Monday night, dominating Wright County by a final of 6-0.

Sandra Fuentes-Cruz had a hat trick, Jayme Perez added two goals and Janey Putney contributed one for the Lynx, who tallied five of their six goals in the opening half.

Webster City (4-6 overall, 3-6 in the North Central Conference) is unbeaten against Wright County overall, including back-to-back clean sheets. The win also snapped a two-match losing skid.

Last week, Webster City dropped a pair of matches to NCC leaders Iowa Falls-Alden (10-0) and Humboldt (2-0). Putney had five shots in the two matches. Megan VanDeer saved nine shots vs. the Wildcats.

“It’s been a rough couple of weeks for our team,” WCHS head coach Kristine Mason said. “We dropped a heartbreaker to Garner after being up 2-0, then lost Kate (Feltz, starting goalie) to an ankle sprain, which allowed them to come back and win. Kate is still out due to her sprain and we do not currently have an ETA on her return.

“We knew we had a tough battle to face against Iowa Falls, but without our normal goalie and a few missing players due to prior commitments, it was pretty demoralizing game for the girls. Against Humboldt, we came out slow and quiet in the first half and two goals got in against our defense who was just really unorganized for their normal. In the second half, we came out with significantly more energy and held them (scoreless). Megan VanDeer played a fantastic game as goalie with a very short training session to prepare her.”

Mason is hoping the squad heals up for the stretch run.

“We just can’t seem to keep a healthy squad to complete a full season, so it makes these games significantly tougher,” Mason said. “We’re looking forward to a better week, and will hope Kate’s ankle heals soon.”

Up next for the Lynx will be a trip to play Hampton-Dumont/CAL on Thursday.

Starting at $3.46/week.
