Webster City girls compete at Humboldt
HUMBOLDT — The Webster City girls track and field team claimed a third-place finish here Monday at a meet hosted by North Central Conference rival Humboldt.
Algona placed first overall, with the Wildcats second. The Lynx were followed in the team standings by Pocahontas Area, Southeast Valley, Hampton-Dumont/CAL, Estherville-LC and St. Edmond.
Isabel Grossoehme won the 400-meter dash, going 1:04.60, while also anchoring both the sprint medley and 4×400 relays to gold medals.
Kali Hartnett, Isabel Weinschenk, Tessa Hansen and Grossoehme went 1:56.16 in the sprint medley, as the same quartet finished the 4×400 in 4:27.07.
“That was one of the coldest meets I have ever been at,” WCHS head coach Tyler Mosbach said. “When you have been used to 70s at track meets, it makes it tough. I told the girls when we got there that everyone was running in the same conditions and those who respond well would come out on top.
“For the most part, I think we did that. We had a productive night and finished in the Top-3 even though it was difficult to get PRs and season’s bests.”
Grossoehme was also the 200 runner-up in a time of 27.50, as Briley VanDeer was second in the 100 hurdles (17.40). In the throwing events, Jakaela Cherry was second in the discus (99-9) and fifth in the shot put (33-2.5); Amanda Lahr placed third in the shot put (35-3.5); and Avery Poppen was fourth in the discus (95-4.5) and won the junior varsity shot put.
Tristyn Wright added a fifth-place effort in the 100 in 14.18.
The 4×200 relay of Hartnett, Weinschenk, Wright and Hansen placed second in 1:57.84, as the 4×800 of Haedyn Soesbe, Evie Davis, Arianna Reed and Mckenna Buakham added a silver in 13:10.76.
Webster City is back in action at Boone on Thursday.
