The Webster City boys soccer team opened the season with a convincing 3-0 victory over Charles City here Monday night.
Geovany Morales Lopez scored the first goal of the match off a pass from Jaime Martinez Andrial, as an own goal by the Comets made it 2-0 at the half in favor of the Lynx.
In the second half, Abisai Ramirez-Carmona converted a penalty kick for the third goal of the match in favor of Webster City (1-0 overall, 1-0 in the North Central Conference), which has now won 16 consecutive regular season matches dating back to 2024.
“We couldn’t ask for a better start,” WCHS head coach Craig Signorin said. “Winning the ball, finding Jaime in space down the left side. He cut it back and played a ball into Geo, who chipped the keeper off the crossbar within 50 seconds of the match starting.
“The rest of the game we were just trying to find our chemistry and build off one another. We are extremely young with only starting one senior and returning three starters from last year, so we have a lot of inexperienced and extremely young players. I thought they all handled themselves really well.”
Freshman Franky Bernal had a team-high three shots on goal for the Lynx, while Lopez, Andrial and Carmona each recorded two. Aaron Mendoza also recorded a shot on goal, as the team peppered the Comet keeper with 10 shots on goal and 15 shots in all.
Edwin Ramos Nolasco remained strong in net, recording a clean sheet over 80 minutes of work.
“Abisai managed any mistakes that were made from the back line and put away a PK for us,” Signorin said. “Mariano (Alejo), Dany (Morales) and Aaron will become stronger and more organized in the middle, but the effort was there. Freshmen Franky and Aeden (Anderson) had strong showings seeing their first varsity action.
“Everyone has a lot of learning to do if we want to meet our goals and keep our expectations high. But I’m proud of the effort.”
Webster City remains at home and in conference action when they host Iowa Falls-Alden on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
