Competition will be fierce over the next few weeks for the Webster City boys golf team in determining who earns a varsity spot to begin the season.

That’s good news for Lynx head coach Eric Dawson, who saw his program qualify for the state tournament last spring.

Webster City returns seniors Dawson Bertran and Carter Mickelson, along with junior Coyce Bertran, from a year ago. They are flanked by several players who gained valuable experience at the junior varsity level in 2025.

“We should have some solid competition between these guys,” Dawson said. “We are going to rely on the consistency of Dawson, Carter and Coyce to lead us.”

Joel Kasch, Gavin Malloy, Matthew Tesdahl, Logan Wilson and Dylan Schroeder all registered junior varsity time last spring, and Eagle Grove transfer Syrus Willard has joined the program. Willard played varsity for the Eagles a year ago.

“We should be fairly consistent with our upperclassmen,” Dawson said. “We qualified for state last year and we will rely on the guys that got us there again. We have a group that enjoys the game and they play all summer long, so I’m anxious to see how much they’ve improved.”

Dawson Bertran posted an average of 83 for 18-hole tournaments in 2025, while Coyce Bertran was at 87 for 18. Webster City played in seven 18-hole events.

Gone from the state-qualifying team are Luke Firsching, Cole Miller and Cael Nixon. The Lynx took 12th overall in Class 3A.

“As we fill out the back end of our varsity lineup, we won’t have a ton of experience as far as varsity competition,” Dawson said. “We will need those guys to step up.”

Up first for Webster City will be a triangular in Carroll with Carroll Kuemper and Panorama on Friday, followed by the Woodward-Granger Invitational on April 16. The Lynx make their home debut on April 24 with a North Central Conference triangular including Clarion-Goldfield/Dows and Hampton-Dumont at Webster City Links Golf Course.

The Lynx Invitational is scheduled for April 30 at Briggs Woods Golf Course.

Starting at $3.46/week.
