DES MOINES — Webster City seniors Gavin Wynkoop and Cody Elliott both finished their careers at the ultimate destination spot — state tournament — during action at the Casey’s Center.
“Gavin and Cody had the opportunity to finish their careers on the biggest stage in high school wrestling,” said Lynx head coach Drake Doolittle. “It may not have ended the way they wanted, but that doesn’t take away from what they accomplished.
“I’m proud of the way they represented our program, our school and their families. They showed up ready to compete, trusted their training, and left everything they had on the mat. That is all we can ever ask of our guys.”
Elliott (31-12), who was making his second straight trip to state, had two victories at 215 pounds. He won his first match in the first round, picking up a tight 1-0 decision over Austyn Kleppe of NH/TV. He than suffered a loss by fall to Mason Koehler of Glenwood.
In the second consolation round, Elliott pinned Travin Thomas of Atlantic in 5:40. He then ended his career with a tough 4-2 setback to Dru Diaz of Davenport Assumption.
Wynkoop (27-15) also had a strong opening round at 144 pounds, beating Center Point-Urbana’s Will Griswod, 8-6. He lost in the second round to Brady Patterson of Benton, 9-2.
Wynkoop was then eliminated from the field by fall in two minutes to Ben Buck of West Marshall.
“For four years, they have both been a major part of our program,” Doolittle said. “They put in the work, set the example in the room, and helped raise the standard for the younger wrestlers.
“There will be big shoes to fill next season, and that says a lot about the impact they’ve had on Webster City wrestling.”
