DES MOINES — Cody Elliott will get another chance at earning a state medal, and this year, his classmate will be right by his side.
Elliott, a two-time state wrestling qualifier, and fellow senior Gavin Wynkoop look to finish their careers on the medal stand inside the Casey’s Center this weekend.
Class 2A state tournament action starts at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
“It’s always good to have a teammate there with you,” said WCHS head coach Drake Doolittle. “It’s better to have the experience with them than going just with a bunch of coaches.
“Having two seniors makes it better. They get one last chance to do this together.”
Wynkoop (144 pounds) earned a district championship on Saturday in his home gym, while Elliott (215) was a district runner-up.
“I’d say Gavin is right where we expected him to be,” Doolittle said. “I’m a firm believer that anything can happen in the state tournament…it just depends on who shows up.
“Both guys are ready to go.”
Wynkoop (26-13) is the 15th seed and will face 18th-seeded senior Will Griswold (30-10) of Center Point-Urbana in the 2A opening round on Thursday.
Second-seed Brady Patterson (40-2), a senior from Benton, awaits for the next matchup.
Elliott (29-10) is the 16th seed and will compete against No. 17 Austyn Kleppe (33-12), a sophomore from NH/TV.
Awaiting the victor will be top-seeded Mason Koehler (47-1), a senior from Glenwood.
“Cody knows what to expect,” Doolittle said. “That makes a big deal and a big difference.
“He gained that experience last year and now he’s back ready to make the podium.”
