South Hamilton boys end drought
STATE CENTER – The South Hamilton boys got in the win column for the first time in 710 days here last Friday night, besting West Marshall, 56-53.
Sam Koehnk sank a 3-pointer with under a minute to go to put the Hawks up by one and Ben Swenson knocked down two free throws with three seconds to play. Ryan Oskvig recorded the game-winning steal to seal the victory.
“So proud of the effort,” South Hamilton head coach Jay Heeren said. “They played through the mistakes, which hasn’t always been the case this year, and did not let frustration creep in. Instead, they rallied around each other.
“Also, the fan support was incredible and really helped the boys stay in the game.”
Jackson Olmsted had a team-high 19 points, as Swenson added 15 and Koehnk finished with eight. Luke Martensen and Oskvig both scored six, and King Brown added two.
The win snapped a 39-game losing skid for the Hawks, who last scored a win in the 2024 substrate semifinal over Pleasantville.
South Hamilton fell in the girls contest to West Marshall, 50-35. Tessa Skartvedt had 11 points and eight rebounds with three steals, as Isabel Swenson added 10 points, six rebounds and four steals.
Signe Swenson chipped in seven points and had three rebounds.
“I thought our girls worked hard and did some good things,” South Hamilton girls head coach Mark Henderson said. “We did not have a great shooting night and West Marshall did. The difference in the game came down to how each team shot from beyond the arc. They knocked down their open looks and we just didn’t.”
The Hawks take on PCM on the road on Tuesday.
